Research Interests

Thania loves animals, especially big ones. When she was a kid, she dreamt of becoming a wildlife researcher at the African savannah, studying terrestrial animals like lions and hyenas. However, when she began to explore the underwater world, she fell in love with it and dreamed of contributing to marine conservation research. Observing the beauty of small sea creatures' details and the majesty of megafauna creatures made her feel comfortable underwater. Manta rays became the first large fish she encountered and they left her amazed. Currently, she is assisting in manta rays and turtles research and conservation in Indonesia, living her dream.

Education

2022 Bachelor of Science, Computer Science
Binus University Jakarta, Indonesia
Intelligent System
Thesis title: “A BERTweet-Based Design for Monitoring Behaviour Change Based on Five Doors Theory on Coral Bleaching Campaign”

Biography

Thania was born in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. Despite being raised in a metropolitan city, her adventurous spirit called her to keep exploring and learning about nature. Since childhood, she has been very comfortable in the water. During holidays, her family annually went to Bali, where she developed a love for coastal activities, starting from playing in the sand and swimming on the beach to trying scuba diving when she was still in secondary school. She took her PADI Open Water Diver course during her freshman year of college and eventually completed her PADI Rescue Diver not long after. Becoming a scuba diver was her gateway to more and more adventure and a love for the underwater world.

She also loves riddles, which is why she pursued Computer Science as her undergraduate degree. While she was finishing her degree online, she had the opportunity to join a coral restoration internship at Coral Catch, Gili Air, Indonesia by Gili Shark Conservation. From there, she gained insights to compile her thesis, combining her expertise in intelligent systems with the coral bleaching issue. Afterward, she did an internship with MMF in Nusa Lembongan. She was thrilled to get the opportunity to dive at the most beautiful sites in Bali for scientific purposes. With an eagerness to lead more people to know more about the underwater world, she became a PADI Divemaster and has previously worked as a local dive guide in Nusa Penida. Recognizing the gap between her educational background and her work in marine conservation, she is looking forward to continuing her education in marine biology by pursuing her Master’s degree soon.

Apart from scuba diving, Thania loves other sports. She was a former finswimming and underwater orienteering athlete. In her leisure time, she enjoys jogging around the island, and probably snacking some avocado and chocolate.

Current MMF projects

Thania is currently based in Nusa Lembongan, Indonesia. She is involved in the manta ray, sea turtle, and tourism projects, where she assists in data collection, data processing and analysis, scientific writing, giving scientific presentations, and managing day-to-day office work.

Projects include:

  • Indonesia Manta Ray Program

  • Manta Ray Reproductive Ecology

  • Indonesia Sea Turtles Program
